Adam Smith's Invisible Hand

collage on paper

21 x 30 cm

Adam Smith is the eighteenth-century economist who termed the phrase 'invisible hand' to describe how he saw the capitalist market maintained by self-interest, competition and supply and demand.

Although the idea of self-maintaining economies is an interesting subject I have used the term in a poetic way, being such an interesting image while reminding us of the theoretical structures that underlie our present way of life.
