collage, sewn cloth and acrylic paint on vinyl wallpaper

43 x 73 cm

This piece developed from the fact that Archimedes is remembered more for having run naked through the streets after a mathematical revelation in the bath and shouting Eureka! than for his actual work.

Although not much is known of his personal life, he has had an enormous influence on the development of mathematics and physics, being generally known as an inventor of various machines and engineering techniques.

I wanted to work with blue and white as this combination is associated with Greece and have used strips of cloth to convey both his costume and the sail of one of the ships he reputedly set fire to using the sun's light concentrated by mirrors.
